Spelling

Read Write Inc. Spelling is a 15-minutes-a-day programme.

At All Saints', following on from our Read Write Inc phonics scheme, we use the Read Write Inc Spelling Programme. It is a proven approach underpinned by phonics, fast–paced lessons and supported by an online subscription.

Read Write Inc. Spelling ensures spelling success for children who are fluent readers. Children start the programme once they have completed the Phonics Read, Write Inc aspect of the programme.

It is an interactive programme which teaches spellings in a fun and engaging way with some alien friends. Each unit is introduced with a short video. It helps children to learn spellings with common patterns and uses rules in order to help them recall spellings as well as teaching exceptions to these rules.

Individual workbooks allow children to practise their spellings and the teaching naturally follows on from the Spell Review part of the RWInc phonics programme, which we begin teaching in the Summer Term of the children's nursery journey.  Therefore the children are already proficient at using dots (for individual sounds) and dashes (for digraphs) and prefixes and suffixes can be added to root words to help them to spell with greater accuracy, understanding and confidence.

The programme covers all of the word structures and spelling requirements for Years 2-6, including explicitly learning spelling rules and how to apply these, as well as learning the Common Exception Words and High Frequency Words that are outlined in the National Curriculum.

The scheme has been specially created to meet the higher demands of the spelling curriculum appendix and the results it produces are strong. Pupils have been carefully grouped to ensure that they are in a group suitable to their spelling knowledge so they can make rapid progress and the needs of all pupils are met.

Pupils receive:

  • A daily spelling pattern lesson.
  • In-school access to the Read, Write, Inc. Spelling practice books which are full of structured activities and lively illustrations.
  • Access to online content in school, with an exciting spelling planet, extra support for checking answers and much more.

Pupils’ spelling knowledge is assessed informally on a weekly basis and then through a spelling test at the end of each half-term. This ensures that they have consolidated the spelling rules learned in the half-term.

As part of the pupils’ homework, they review and revise spelling rules and patterns that have been previously taught, using their words to ‘Log and Learn’ each week. Regular, daily repetition of spellings is vitally important to ensure that all pupils can consolidate and apply their spelling knowledge.
