Early Reading-Phonics

At All Saints’, our shared vision is that every child learns to read and continues to read – widely and often. We strive to encourage a love of reading that helps children to go from strength to strength in all other areas of the curriculum. Through our rigorous phonics curriculum, we ensure pupils develop the skills and knowledge they need to develop as confident readers who enjoy books. We believe that being a fluent reader, with a passion for stories and texts, promotes a wide vocabulary and imagination. This in turn contributes to children’s wellbeing and their ability to be respectful, resilient role-models, who make a positive contribution in society.  It is our intention that all children gain the phonics knowledge and language comprehension necessary to read and spell, no matter their starting point. We want all of our children to feel confident when tackling any unfamiliar words they read. We aim for the children to ‘keep up’, not ‘catch up’. To achieve this, we ensure that phonics learning is prioritised at all times, allowing children to build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code and become confident readers and spellers as they move through the school. Once our children have unlocked the key to reading, it is our intention that all children will be able to apply their phonics skills in order to access any subject across the curriculum and in their future education.
