2. What is the impact of RE at All Saints'?

Impact of Religious Education at All Saints’

At All Saints’, the impact of our Religious Education curriculum is seen in the progress pupils make in knowledge, understanding and reflection, as well as in their ability to engage thoughtfully with questions of belief, meaning and identity.

Assessment for Learning

Assessment in RE is purposeful and ongoing, ensuring teachers understand what pupils know, remember and can do. It is closely linked to the curriculum and supports high-quality teaching by identifying next steps in learning.

Teachers use a range of strategies to assess progress throughout each unit, including:

  • Retrieval practice to strengthen memory and recall of key knowledge

  • Questioning and quizzes to check understanding

  • Activities that encourage pupils to make connections across their learning

Developing Knowledge and Skills

Pupils’ progress is assessed across three key areas:

  • Substantive knowledge – what pupils know and remember about religions and worldviews

  • Disciplinary knowledge – how pupils think, question and interpret as learners in RE

  • Personal knowledge – how pupils reflect on and respond to their own beliefs and experiences

More complex tasks, such as extended writing, discussion, creative outcomes and interpretation of sources, allow pupils to demonstrate deeper understanding and apply their learning.

Measuring Progress Over Time

The curriculum enables pupils to develop increasing understanding through the lenses of:

  • Believing (theological)

  • Thinking (philosophical)

  • Living (sociological)

Progress is tracked against end-of-key-stage expectations, ensuring pupils build knowledge and skills in a coherent and structured way. Opportunities to revisit key concepts (“golden threads”) support long-term understanding.

Moderation and Standards

Regular moderation of work ensures consistency, high expectations and accurate assessment across the school. Teachers review a range of evidence, including written work, discussion, creative outcomes and pupil voice, to ensure all pupils are making appropriate progress.

Celebrating Learning

RE learning is celebrated through:

  • High-quality RE books, showcasing both written and creative work

  • Floor books and Tapestry in EYFS and Year 1, capturing group learning and pupil voice

  • Class displays, which reflect current learning, key concepts, Christian values and Rights Respecting links

These approaches highlight the importance of RE and demonstrate the depth and variety of pupils’ learning.

Outcomes for Pupils

As a result of our RE curriculum, pupils at All Saints’:

  • Develop strong religious literacy and knowledge of Christianity and other worldviews

  • Show respect, empathy and understanding towards others
