1. What does reading in Y2 to Y6 look like?

At All Saints’, we have a structured and engaging approach that provides purposeful opportunities for immersive text engagement, vocabulary development, and rich discussion. High-quality texts are selected to engage and provide powerful examples of ambitious writing. Our belief in the transformative power of reading ensures that students are encouraged to connect personally with texts, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of different perspectives.

Through extensive planning, and the use of structured progression maps, pupils develop critical reading skills progressively and systematically as they move through the school. Teachers utilise explicit modelling and guided comprehension practice strategies, enabling children to navigate texts confidently by learning techniques such as scanning for keywords, underlining vital information, and using context for understanding.

Where necessary, pupils not making expected progress receive targeted and structured intervention, such as 1:1 reading sessions or phonics revision. These interventions are scaffolded to ensure accessibility and success while maintaining high expectations.

Additionally, cross-curricular connections are embedded within the reading curriculum, allowing children to apply their reading skills to their current topic work. This integration reinforces comprehension and analytical abilities while promoting the transfer of knowledge and skills across disciplines.

Our weekly routine comprises three types of lessons:

This approach cultivates a love of reading, a strong grasp of comprehension skills and will enable all students to achieve their best.
